Specific Issue Orders, Special Guardianship Orders and Child Name Change
If you are looking to change a child’s name and have a Specific Issue Order or Special Guardianship Order, it is important to understand how the court order affects the Child Deed Poll process.
At the Deed Poll Department, we can review your circumstances and help you obtain the appropriate Child Deed Poll where a court order has been granted or additional consent requirements apply.
Do you have a court order for a child’s name change?
Please contact our dedicated support team if your child’s name change involves any of the following:
• A Special Guardianship Order
• A Specific Issue Order authorising the name change
• Another Family Court order relating to the child
• Uncertainty about who must provide consent
Please email our dedicated child name change support team at support@deedpolldepartment.co.uk.
How a court order may affect a Child Deed Poll?
✅ A Special Guardianship Order gives the special guardian enhanced parental responsibility
✅ A Special Guardianship Order does not automatically authorise a child’s name change in every case
✅ Consent may still be required from other people who hold parental responsibility
✅ If consent cannot be obtained, a Specific Issue Order may be required from the Family Court
✅ If the court has authorised the name change, a Child Deed Poll can usually be prepared
✅ The completed Deed Poll can be used to update the child’s records with UK organisations
What are the steps for changing the child’s name?
Changing a child’s name where a court order is involved is straightforward once the relevant documents have been reviewed.
Step 1. Email our support team at support@deedpolldepartment.co.uk with details of the requested name change.
Step 2. Provide a copy of the Special Guardianship Order, Specific Issue Order, or other relevant court order.
Step 3. Our team will review the circumstances promptly and confirm the consent and documentation requirements.
Step 4. Once everything is confirmed, we will advise you on the appropriate Child Deed Poll application.
Step 5. After the Deed Poll has been correctly signed and executed, it can be used to update your child’s records.
Which organisations can be updated?
A properly completed Child Deed Poll can usually be presented to organisations such as:
• HM Passport Office
• Schools and educational institutions
• GP surgeries and NHS services
• HMRC
• Local authorities and other UK organisations
